Writing
Always start with the writing system!
Hiragana (ひらがな) is one of the three writing systems used in Japanese and is the first script every learner should master. It consists of 46 basic characters that represent individual sounds rather than letters, making it a phonetic alphabet, or more accurately, a syllabary. Hiragana is used to write native Japanese words, grammatical endings, and words that don't commonly use kanji.
Once you can read hiragana, you'll be able to pronounce nearly any Japanese word, read simple sentences, and begin building a strong foundation for learning grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. While memorizing a new writing system may seem challenging at first, consistent daily practice will help you recognize and write each character with confidence.
Grammar
The basis of any sentence.
Verbs are one of the most important building blocks of Japanese because they describe actions, events, and states of being. Unlike English, Japanese verbs do not change based on the subject (I, you, he, she, etc.). Instead, they change through conjugation, allowing you to express different meanings such as past and present tense, negative forms, politeness, ability, desire, commands, and more.
Learning how to conjugate verbs opens the door to creating countless sentences and expressing yourself naturally in Japanese.
As you progress, you'll become familiar with the three main verb groups and learn the patterns that make Japanese verb conjugation much more predictable than it first appears.
Grammar
Marking the parts of speech of the sentence.
Particles are small words that play a big role in Japanese grammar. They come after nouns, pronouns, or phrases to show how each word functions within a sentence. Instead of relying heavily on word order like English, Japanese uses particles to indicate topics, subjects, objects, locations, directions, means, and more. For example, the particle は marks the topic of a sentence, while を marks the direct object and に can indicate a destination or point in time. Although particles can seem confusing at first because many have multiple uses, learning them gradually through context and practice will make them feel natural. Mastering particles is one of the most important steps toward understanding and speaking Japanese accurately.
